The hamlet
of Rull nestles at the foot of the Blackdown Hills,
which have been afforded the official status of "designated
area of outstanding natural beauty", a classification
designed to promote tourism whilst restricting unwanted
development. The natural charm of the area has been
delightfully preserved; gentle ambience remains.
The view from the converted cottages is quietly beautiful;
typically English, typically Devon. The sitting rooms
of each cottage have Georgian style wooden French windows
that frame the valley perfectly; just sit and relax.
A small stream, the rumoured
home of the odd trout, trickling in the summer, gushing
in the winter, can be heard from the decking on the
east side of the cottages. Swimming Pool (25 ft x 14 ft x 48"
deep).
When you venture down to the stream you will find a
garden, delightful bridges crossing the water and a
wooden deck area surrounded by a few fruit trees we
grandiosely refer to as "the orchard". In the summer
you have a difficult choice: keep your drinks cool in
the stream, or use the fridge in your cottage whilst
relaxing on the decking outside your own front door?
Decisions, decisions! A holiday should be made of these.
It really is a beautiful spot.
Brook View Cottage has one
conventional twin-bedded bedroom with an additional
double bedded sleeping space in the open plan, loft
style bedroom, galleried onto the beamed lounge roof
space. The lounge adjoins a full equipped
kitchenette
with everything you will need for a comfortable stay.
Garden Cottage has one twin
bedded bedroom and one bunk bedded bedroom with additional
double bedded sleeping space in a larger hay loft style
room, again galleried to the lounge. Both cottages feature
sturdy beams under a cathedral style roof space and
are tastefully furnished.
The floors are tiled with warm terracotta and Mexican
rugs are dotted here and there. We have designed the
layouts to allow for wheelchair use if accompanied by
a carer. We are sure you will find them to your liking.
A complimentary bottle of
wine awaits your arrival.
The Cottages have full wireless internet (WiFi)
service for connecting your own wireless-enabled
PC or laptop.
Pets are welcome. We do,
however, say no to puppies. If you bring your dog, please
bear in mind that we have two barn cats and our neighbours
have some free range geese and chickens. Please keep
dogs on a lead whilst within the site.
We welcome children. We hope that one of the benefits
you will enjoy as much as we do is the peace and
tranquillity of this quiet valley
setting. Bed linen and towels are not provided.
We can arrange horse riding
from a choice of two excellent local stables. There
are many equestrian activities available. Choose from
formal lessons to long wooded valley hacks, or perhaps
even a "pub ride". Located about a mile away are the
racing stables of Stuart Kittow, a renowned horse trainer.
The horses can be seen each morning on the all-weather
gallop. Stable visits can be organised by arrangement.
Half a mile away is the village of Ashill where you
will find the Ashill Inn. A little further is the village
of Kentisbeare where there is a post office and The
Wyndham Arms that boasts a fair menu.
Uffculme is 2.5 miles away.
Here there are a handful of shops, including a Co-Op
and a post office, and a couple of Pubs, The George
and The Ostler. You will also find the Veterinary Surgery.
This area is great for cycling or walking. Step out
of your front door and you are immediately in walking,
cycling and riding territory. There is trout fishing
in the nearby village of Sheldon, and all manner of
dangerous activities going on at a private airfield
at Dunkeswell: Microlights,
Parachuting, Rally Driving,
Biplanes and other flying
activities. As well as Trout
Fishing, Sheldon also has its own Gliding
Club that sits atop the escarpment facing towards the
sea and the Cathedral City of Exeter. Both coasts are
within easy reach if you fancy a day at the beach.
We hope that you decide to stay at Rull Cottages and
that you thoroughly enjoy your visit. We will do everything
we can to make your stay comfortable.
Whether you come to Devon for all it has to offer or
just to sit and relax, we hope you choose to stay with
us again and again. Thank you for your enquiry. We look
forward to welcoming you.
